A REVEAL-ING LOOK AT SPYDERCO’S NEW PRODUCTS If you follow Spyderco closely, you may have already been aware of the release of the Endela Lightweight Wharncliffe before receiving this edition of the byte. It was the first product to be unveiled using our newly revised “Reveal” process. With this method, new Spyderco products are now announced to the public digitally through our social media platforms and the Spyderco Smartphone app. The timing of these digital “Reveals” is driven by the actual on-the-shelf availability of the product. When you learn about it, the initial inventory of that product is already in-house and ready to ship to our dealers and distributors or consumer-direct to you through Spyderco.com. We receive product...
Edge-U-Cation® - WHARNCLIFFE HISTORY For many astute knife users, the Wharncliffe-style blade represents the ultimate synthesis of pocketknife form and function. Its deceptively simple profile, perfectly straight cutting edge, and acute point make it incredibly versatile and adaptable to a wide variety of tasks. Like the straight-edged utility knives used by tradesmen, it cuts with impressive power and delivers that power all the way to the tip. Like a scalpel or X-Acto® knife, it also offers splinter-picking precision and control when working with the point. While Wharncliffe knives have become increasingly popular in recent years, they are by no means new. In fact, the original design dates back to the early 1800s and one of the...
ENDELA® LIGHTWEIGHT WHARNCLIFFE Featured Product SKU: C243FPWCBK / FSWCBK MSRP: $125.00 ORIGIN: Japan The more time you spend around knives, the more you realize there is no one-size-fits-all cutting tool. Just as importantly, there is no one-shape-fits-all knife either. Human hands are organic and vary significantly from one person to another. Unless you’re perfectly content with straight, unsophisticated, and relatively boring handle designs, some knife handles will simply “feel” better in your hand than others. That’s a big part of the magic of knife design and a critical element of appreciating the broad spectrum of knives available to us. Spyderco’s Delica® and Endura® are two of the most popular folding knives ever produced...
Edge-U-Cation® - COLLABORATOR CORRECTION In last month’s issue of the byte, our in-house technical writer Michael Janich wrote: “In 1990, Spyderco became the first production knife company to collaborate with a custom knifemaker in the design of a factory-made knife.” This statement is not historically accurate. Bob Terzuola’s Spyderco design was the first custom-knifemaker collaboration on a factory-made folding knife design, but it was not the first time a custom maker collaborated with a knife manufacturer. That honor rightfully goes to the late Robert W. Loveless and the Schrade Cutlery Corporation. During 1975-1976, Schrade produced a Loveless-designed fixed blade called the “Schrade-Loveless Hunter” (RL-2). From 1991-1995...
PARA MILITARY™ 2 MICARTA CPM® CRU-WEAR® Featured Product SKU: C81MPCW2 MSRP: $245.00 ORIGIN: USA Since its release in 2010, the Para Military 2 has earned legions of followers worldwide and earned an iconic status in the Spyderco product line. Hands down one of our best-selling models, it has also been the canvas for dozens of special variations, including limited-edition Sprint Run™ and Exclusive expressions of the design featuring a broad spectrum of blade steels, handle materials, coatings, and even different blade shapes. Although Spyderco enthusiasts enjoy all the unique combinations of materials featured in our Sprint Runs, one pairing that has been exceptionally well received is the fusion of a CPM® CRU-WEAR® blade with...
SPYDERCO'S PINK KNIVES Update As we prepare to turn another page on the calendar, we’d like to remind you that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2020 there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685,000 deaths from the disease worldwide. At the close of 2020, there were 7.8 million women alive who had been diagnosed with breast cancer within the past 5 years, making it the world’s most prevalent cancer. For many years, Spyderco has supported charities devoted to the prevention, research, and treatment of this devastating disease. To that end, we have produced a number of our folding knife models with vibrant pink handles and donated a portion of all...
SPYDERCO DESIGNER'S MARKS Edge-U-Cation® In 1990, Spyderco became the first production knife company to collaborate with a custom knifemaker in the design of a factory-made knife. That groundbreaking effort created the C15 Bob Terzuola CLIPIT® and became a turning point in the history of the cutlery industry. Since that time, Spyderco has continued to set the standard in partnering with custom knifemakers, martial artists, industrial designers, and other accomplished subject matter experts in the design of our products. Although our in-house talent—led by company founder Sal Glesser and his son Eric—continues to reign among the knife industry’s best and most prolific designers, our open-minded approach to collaborating with other...

20th ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 Update September 11, 2001 changed our world forever. In addition to the tragic loss of life caused by that day’s horrific terrorist attacks, 9/11 represented a turning point for our society and our identity as a nation. It revealed our vulnerabilities as they existed at that time, while instantly strengthening our resolve and vigilance. In the wake of unspeakable evil, it inspired heroism, selflessness, and the very best qualities of human character. And like all significant historical events, it helped define who we are today. The memories of that day are forever etched into our minds. Twenty years later, people can still recall exactly where they were and what they were doing when we collectively realized...
THIN LINE SERIES Featured Product SKU: C10FPSBKBL C11FPSBKBL C14FPSBKBL C243FPSBKBL C10FPSBKRD C11FPSBKRD C14FPSBKRD C 243FPSBKRD MSRP: $130.00 to $155.00 ORIGIN: Japan When Spyderco revolutionized the form of the modern folding knife back in the early 1980’s, many traditional knife users were skeptical of our unorthodox designs. The Trademark Round Hole™, the pronounced “hump” on the spine of the blade, the pocket clip, and the aggressive serrated edge made our knives very different from the brass-bolstered, wood-scaled back lock folders they were used to. Some of the very first end users to embrace the Spyderco approach to knife design were law enforcement officers and first responders. As duty-bound professionals, they valued...

POLICE™ MODEL Spyderco Insider Recently, Spyderco was honored to host a visit from a long-time Spyderco Forumite who goes by the forum username “Yablanowitz.” A U.S. Navy veteran and long-time Spyderco enthusiast, Yablanowitz specializes in collecting variations of our iconic Police Model. He’s spent years tracking down rare variants of this classic design—many of which have seen extensive real-world use—and was kind enough to bring his collection along for us to examine, discuss, and photograph. Spyderco founder Sal Glesser, Digital Media/Marketing Administrator Kristi Hunter, and Special Projects Coordinator Michael Janich all gave Yablanowitz a warm welcome when he arrived. Then, while Sal and Kristi showed him some of the inner...
