About my "WHART"...

Aloha ALL,

Again, I hope you all have been doing better than I have as of late...HELL has been pretty crazy. Ugh. I have said it before, and will say it again: Concrete Hurts.

Anyway, sometime ago, I did a terrible mod to one of my Trance folders, and called it the WHART. It had a "squarish" looking blade, and the blade was a bit longer than 2". In the mid 1990's, I was using a Spyderco SE Dragonfly exclusively on the job. It was small, light, and the blade was small enough not to scare the heck out of what Tactical Knives' Mr. Jerry VanCook coined as the, "Non-Knife Educated" folks. However:

There were times when I wished that little 1st Generation Spyderco Dragonfly had a longer handle, but the same blade length. Back then, I had experimented with this "concept" by mutilating a Delica, LOL! This "short blade, long handle" is not a new concept, as box cutters have been around almost forever. But I wanted this feature in a folding knife. A few years back, Spyderco proved this concept to be sound in the form of the Dodo, and then again in the shape of the C110 Lava, both of which are disco'd models...sad.

When I designed the Trance, as with ALL my folders, I ALWAYS have a buncha blade variants. A short blade housed in the Trance handle was one of them. That being said, I decided to make...er..."mutilate" one for myself. It started out as the WHART, and a couple months ago I re-shaped the blade into one of the other short blade variants. I guess I gotta call this one the WHART 2. DISCLAIMER: I will not be responsible should you be drinking something and you do a spit take on your monitor, mouse, or keyboard upon seeing the pics of my WHART 2!!!

I was not gonna show this one, because I did such a terrible job on it...but if you squint, it looks pretty decent! Um, the WHART 2 has a "traditional" Wharncliffe blade, and I decided to have some fun and added a Hamon to it. No, make that, I TRIED to add a Hamon to it. This proved to be something I should NOT have done...I shoulda just left the WHART 2, "as is" after I re-shaped it! D'Oh!

Figuring it could only get worse, I sanded out the Hamon and went higher on the blade, and the end result is a very scratchy mirror finish. I think I need to run a few more grits on the blade, but I ain't gonna do anything more to this one. OBTW, I removed the ala Carson Flipper to utilize this tiny Wharncliffe blade to it's fullest.

After rushing the Dremel that ran away from me often, and using a TON of elbow grease with a few grits of sandpaper and polish, here is the CLB Design WHART 2...Hey, remember the Disclaimer now!

The edge got a bit wrecked with the "Runaway Dremel", but my Spyderco Sharpmaker EASILY restored it. I accidentally changed the grind a bit, to what type of grind I have no idea, but this "W2" is friggin' SPOOKY sharp!!! My W2 also does the same thing as most of the SFV's (Subcom Folder Variants) do while running it through cardboard and just cutting "random lines": The blade stops at the studs and acts as a "guide" while cutting shapes, wiggly lines, angles, etc. Yeah, I know, "Whoopie Chad."

I believe that there is a place in the industry for a folder like this, especially in strict blade length limiting jurisdictions and countries...but the WHART 2 is not limited to ONLY those places. Like my Spyderco C110 Lava, a LOT of leverage can be applied due to the handle to blade ratio which affords the user INCREDIBLE control while cutting, and it won't scare people if used in an urban enironment.

Anyway, appreciate you all taking the time to check this out, and I know the title sounded disgusting, but...I am ready for the bashing now...but uh, go easy please...only throw soft fruits and veggies okay?

God bless and be safe!
Chad:ahaa:
