First of all I want to say thank you to Benchmade for supporting this passaround and giving us the chance to test this knife in practical use.
First impression:
The first impression was really good. I took the 522 out of the box and felt a solid knife in my hand. Exactly the right size (for my hands
). So let's have a closer look. And here I want to compare the 522 - because it's really obvious - in some points with the 520. The first difference between the two knives that I recognized was the weight. It is not much but the 522 is lighter than the 520. Especially when you carry the knife in your pocket you can feel the difference. So this is a plus for the 522.
Blade:
The blade is made of 440C. I must confess that 440C is not my favorite blade steel material. The blade was absolutely sharp out of box. The Drop Point shape fits to the overall impression of the knife. Here we have one more difference between the 522 and the 520. The 520 has a flat ground blade, the 522 a hollow ground blade (see pic. 2). I found no difference between the two blade styles for cutting hard things (salami) or opening boxes, but for cutting softer materials (tomatoes) the 520 showed advantages. Also the 522 (440C) loose its sharpness faster than the 520 (154CM). So this point goes to the 520.
Lock:
Like the 520 the 522 has got an AXIS lock. I don't want to lose too many words here. For me the AXIS lock is the best lock I found until now - I think that are enough words
Handle:
As I mentioned above the 522 is lighter than the 520. This is a result of the handle material. The 522 has got molded handles the 520 machined aluminum handles. So the handles of the 520 are a little bit heavier the 522 handles. Never the less the center of mass is nearly the same for both knives (see pic. 4). The texture of the two handles are different but both styles serve the purpose - a solid grip. But one subjective advantage is on the 522 side - the molded handles have a warmer grip feeling, which I prefer. So this point for the 522.
Summary:
The 522 is definitely a very good EDC knife with the typical very good BM quality. Two things I have to mention. The first thing is the "new" clip where the finish has the tendency to chip of. This was much better at the older clips but I can live with that.
The second point is the blade. Here the point goes definitely to the 520. For me the better steel and the better ground shape.
The handle point goes the 522. Lighter material, solid and warm material - very nice. So the perfect way would be a mixture of 520 (blade) and 522 (handle). Maybe I should change the blades ...
