Here’s a little report on the first Dutch knife show Ed de Pauw and I organized. Because there has never been a show before in Holland, it was a gamble to organize one. Would there be enough interest? Are we going to get some unwanted publicity? (many stabbings lately), How are the authorities going to react?
So we had our doubts but just went ahead. Somebody has to be the first! Together with the help from Theo van Leeuwen, Gudy van Poppel, Andrew Jordan, Erwin Pijck and Henk Kraayvanger we organized the first show this December the first.
We received a lot of interest from the tableholders, so much that we had to place many of them on the reserve list. An international line-up was the result, something we didn’t dare to dream of.
We advertised very specifically to attract the right kind of crowd. we hoped for 500 visitors, a number that we reached easily. From the table holders we learned that the crowd was very interested and wanted to learn more about the products, which is a good thing! Maybe this was also the reason that a great number of makers sold very good.
For this first edition makers could also participate in a knife election. Erwin Pijck (writer for Le passion de couteau), Hans Brons (photographer and knife nut) and Henk Kraayvanger (writer for gunmagazine AK56) formed the jury. Their efforts resulted in the following:
Best Fixed Blade: Claes Lofgren
Best Folder: Albert van den Heuvel (Hill Knives)
Best User: Alfred Dobner
Best Damascus blade: Andrew Jordan
Best of Show: Coproduction Achim Wirtz/Norbert Bönig
Best Newcomer: Indra Wijaya
At the end of the show there was a lottery/tumbula. Andrew Jordan sponsored the show with one of his excellent Tactical fixed blade. Other present where sponsored by the France magazine Excaliber.
We think the show was a great success. Of course there are points to do better, but we can learn from them, which is necessary because we already busy with the 2008 edition! Bigger location, bigger show.
