After much thought, RAT Knives has decided to discontinue the RAT Model 1 Folder. While the price, design and quality of the folder is exceptional, we have decided to concentrate all of our efforts to U.S. manufacture only. Over the last few years there have been too many American-made knife companies go under with a flood of cheaper imports contributing to that demise. While we firmly believe in Capitalism and that every company has a duty to make a profit, thus a right to have their product manufactured as they wish, we still believe in the American manufacturer and worker and believe that most customers are willing to pay a little more for a quality, American made knife. Maybe we're wrong but we're willing to take that chance. Is this going to cost us money to discontinue the folder? Yes. But we have decided to bet our brand and future success in the industry on 'American Made.'

At the present time, there are still Model 1 Folders available and in stock. This announcement only serves as notice of the proposed discontinuation.

As an aside Jeff and I have been and still are looking for a U.S. maker for the folder. Quality and price are important for us to give the buyer the best knife for their dollars as always. The Ontario facility in Franklinville , New York does not have the capacity to do this kind of folder but all of our other knives are made there. When we re introduce the folder with a U.S. maker I will post it here immediately for all of you. Thank you all for your strong support.

We are very conscious of what our friends in Eastern Europe can afford to buy. It does no one any good to make an excellent knife that most cannot buy because of a high price. That is of course the attraction to the Chinese market for manufactured goods. But Jeff and I both believe we can deliver a U.S. made knife, excellent quality at an affordable price. This is the philosophy we use with our fixed blade knives and so we are applying it to all our knives. Give us a little time. I think we can deliver just as good a folder at a comparable price.

Also bear in mind that there are a few hundred of all models still in stock so they can still be bought for a little while. My best guess is that by about June they will be gone.

We appreciate your support.
