Bushcraft UK - 2nds "Heads-up"

Hi all,

As most of you know, our Bushcraft UK collaboration had difficulties. The short story is that the stabilized wood that we used, a very beautiful "Spalted Maple", for the handle ended up not being stabilized and we experienced cracking on the handles of 95% of the run. The wood vendor assumes no liability other than to replace the raw wood.

As a result of this dilemma, Spyderco has decided to sell the pieces as 2nds through our web-site. The price of the knife with leather sheath is $90.

Some have thought to replace the handle, but I believe that removing the handle and reproducing the excellent ergonomics of the original design would be difficult to impossible for most. My suggestion, for those that get one, would be to fill the cracks, polish the handle and enjoy using the piece. Of course the knife is also functional with the cracks as they are.

Our apologies to our customers for the problem encountered which forces this change of direction.

Not really pleased to read this ... as I ordered + payed my Bushcraft already before the "Bushcraft-Problem" was made public ... and payed the fully price (something the double of the $90-second price) ... and became a second now afterwards ...

Thanks,
Serge

Sal,

As business point I understand your decision and appreciate your frankness. You trusted in the supplier of the "stabilized wood" and I trusted in your product, as always in the past. On the other hand even for the hard core collector I am, it leaves a bitter aftertaste to own your 1st run Bushcraft with a possibility of 95% for cracked wood in the future.

Price difference to the 2nd's is not my point, as it was my risk to buy your Buschcraft shortly after launch and Spyderco guarantee allows customer to return the knife in case of manufacturing error and you will do refund. My point is that I expect proverbial Spyderco quality for my good money and not cash back. And that's the reason why I don't buy one of your cheaper 2nd Bushcrafts.

I really hope the whole situation is singular case.

Yep, dilemma is a well description for the situation.

Last but not least: Kudos to you as president of Spyderco for informing your customers!

That really was a bummer for everyone involved. I hope you will do better next time.

Still, I think there will be quite a number of people buying the seconds and some of them who will rip down the scales and replace them with something nice, because most bushcrafters are pretty crafty in crafts projects. :irre:

Apologies.

If any of your knives crack, we'll take them back and give you full retail credit.

I think I would fill the cracks rather than try to replace the scales. They are not large cracks, but cracks non-the-less and can not be sold as new knives.

If you didnt experience any cracks by now; I'd assume your chances are better than 95%. :)

You might also try to regularly oil the handles; an advice Bill Martino used to give on Khukuri handles to avoid cracks.

Too bad the wood vendor only had to replace the material; I hope you dont loose too much on this run :hmpf:

The expression that we use in the US, "Sometimes you win a few and sometimes you lose a few".

Thanx for your kind understanding.

Too bad they are out of stock now that I found them, and found them to be fitting my needs perfectly. :-(

No chance left to pick one up?

Welchen?
