Hier is mein Hackmesser.

Zwei kg's, Walnüß grips. Hangs in the kitchen pantry and ready to make steaks from roasts. We butcher our game and home grown lamb into mostly roasts now, and grab the Hackmesser wehn needed.

I made it from a heavy log processor bar. Edge is a stout double bevel that holds up on any bone it contacts.

Hello ElkviewRanche,
great chopper! Could you explain what a "heavy log processor bar" is?
I could imagine that it is a heavy tool to split tree trunks, but I'm not sure. (something like this: http://carlneutzel.com/firewood.html ?)

Hi ElkviewRanch,

i saw many nice pictures from you, not only this heavy knife.

Thanks for the impressions, looks that you have much fun :super:

greetings from vienna (austria)

Danke alle.

A log processor is a huge, tracked machine that goes from tree to tree and grabs the tree, cuts the tree, delimbs the tree and stacks it. There are various types of these but some use a heavy bar chainsaw to buck {cut into lengths} the tree.

The processor bars are very heavy and make superb, heavy, classic cleavers.

This Hackmesser works well for classic Hackmesser work; splitting carcasses, making chops, etc. The Hackmesser has mostly been replaced by the bandsaw in butcher shops and such in America. So the Hackmesser isn't used very much, except at my place where it is used all the time! :)

Great chopper, reminds of an artical in the us knife magazine Blade, where a classic cleaver and a parang are tested.

Is this monosteel or is the log processor bar a "sandwiche" made of different types of steels?

Greetings

ralle

Freak, that is mine. I have written a number of articles over the yaers pertaining to various knives. Some I've made, some I've just tested.

The cleaver was one I wrote up for Krause Publications.

hi man over there,
sh.... what a thing:glgl:---
in former times such a thing was used over here to
chop of heads of bad ones....:steirer:
looks like you can use for slaughtering too----
holy jeeses:lechz:

is it what we call a "harvester"?
However, if it is so, which part is used for the blade? The chain, part of the chassis or what? Would be very interesting for me.

It´s a big thing

Thank´s for showing

Hello and thanks.

The processor bar is the part that the chain rides around. Yes, natto, like a blade that the chain runs around.

This part of the chainsaw makes for a very good knife. Most seem to be made for 1080 or some such carbon spring steel. They are easy to anneal and reharden and temper.

The processor bars are thicker than regular handheld chainsaw bars.
