First of all I want to say thank you to Benchmade for supporting this passaround and giving us the chance to test the 7HOOK in practical use.
First impression:
The first time I saw the 7HOOK on the BM homepage I was not really thrilled. I am a fan of knives and so I never thought about a hook. But then I had the chance to lay my fingers on a 7HOOK (at the OutDoor 2008) and I was very impressed about the performance! And if you consider the new situation regarding the weapons law in Germany I thought such a hook may could a knife in some situations. Thats one of the reason I statred this passaround.
The processing of both the hook and the soft sheath is perfect ot of box. The sharpness was excellent - I tried to check the sharpness right out of box at the tip of my thumb and what shoud I say. There was no blood but I removed the top skin layer. I think this is very very sharp!!
Points: 10 of 10
Working experience:
I used the hook for cutting materials like polymer films (thikness 50µm - 250µm), cardboard box, leafes and branches of indoor plants. No really hard use but I used it very often what the coating on the backside doesn't like very much! I carried the hook at my belt what works very well in both directions horizontal and vertical carrying. Sometimes the seam of the sheath scratches the skin if you have direct contact so I had to make sure that the shirt is between the skin and the sheath.
The shape allows a perfect an precise handling of the hook. Due to the handle shape and the riffles on the top the hook allows a reliable grip. The only negative point I found was the thikness of the hook at the rounded tip. It was not possible to get in deeper layers of a furled polymer film. It would be better if the tip would be more narrow to get in between close layers.
Points: 7 of 10
Summary:
17 of 20 points is really a very good result. Nevertheless it is not a kife. The 7HOOK is a very good tool with high quality but it is not a full substitute for a blade. I woud say it is a very useful addition to a blad and as such I will use it.
