If you’re familiar with the history of Spyderco, you may know the origins of its unique name. The “spider” theme was partly inspired by company co-founder Sal Glesser’s first product, the “Portable Hand.” A metal frame with multiple spring clips for holding electronic parts in place while soldering, its shape resembled that of an arachnid . The other element, spelled with a “y,” had its origins in Sal’s love of sports cars. Also known as “roadsters” and sometimes as “spiders” with an “i,” "spyders," were typically open-topped or convertible two-seater models that epitomized stylish high performance.

Not surprisingly, Sal’s penchant for sports cars didn’t stop with the Spyderco name. It not only became a lifelong passion but was also the genesis for one of his latest and most distinctive knife designs, the Edgerati.

The “Birdcage”
The defining feature of the Edgerati’s design—and the genesis of its name—is its intricately machined, pierced geometric handle. This distinctive design element was inspired by the frame of the revolutionary “birdcage” Maserati. Officially known as the Maserati Tipo 60/61, it was a style of racing car produced between 1959 and 1961 by legendary Italian automobile manufacturer Maserati. This groundbreaking design showcased an intricate tubular chassis consisting of nearly 200 chro-moly steel tubes meticulously welded together. The tubes were arranged in triangular formations at critical stress points of the chassis, creating a rigid yet exceptionally lightweight construction. More advanced than the competing sports cars of its time, this revolutionary construction style quickly earned the nickname “birdcage.” True to that bold, innovative spirit, Sal designed the Edgerati to not only pay homage to the car that inspired it, but also translate the advantages of that unique design theme into the high-performance language of knives.

Truth be told, the concept of the Edgerati lived in Sal’s mind for many years; however, the final design was not officially introduced until 2025. To replicate the pierced “birdcage” aspect of the sports car chassis, the handle scales of the Edgerati are painstakingly machined from solid billets of 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum. This time-intensive CNC machining process removes significant amounts of material to create the design’s complex pattern. That pattern, and the handle’s minimalist partial backspacer, greatly reduce the overall weight of the knife and create a truly unique visual aesthetic. From a functional standpoint, they also give the handle scales a comfortable, high-traction texture that complements its refined ergonomics to ensure a secure grip in even the most demanding circumstances.

The obverse, or “mark side,” scale (the left scale, as viewed from above with the open knife edge down and point facing away from you) of the Edgerati is also machined to house a stainless steel lock bar that serves as the foundation of the knife’s streamlined Compression Lock® mechanism. Rather than the “split” nested or full liners of other Spyderco Compression Lock models, the streamlined mechanism consists of a separate lock bar seated into a precision-machined recess in the scale. Used on the popular Para® 3 Lightweight and several metal-handled Exclusive versions of the Para Military® 2, this unique expression of the Compression Lock faithfully delivers all the defining qualities of the standard version. These include excellent strength and the ability to easily close the knife one handed without ever placing your fingers in the path of the blade’s edge. The Edgerati, however, also allows the details of the lock’s mechanism to be fully visible through the machined cutouts of the handle scales.

The Edgerati showcases a straight-spined blade crafted from CPM S30V particle metallurgy stainless steel. It features a full-flat grind for superior edge geometry and low-friction cutting performance. It also includes a textured index-finger choil (finger groove) and thumb ramp that allow a forward-positioned grip for enhanced control during detailed cutting tasks. These features also provide additional grip “real estate” for users with extra-large hands. A fully accessible Trademark Round Hole™ proudly announces the knife’s Spyderco pedigree and allows swift, positive, one-handed opening with either hand.

To ensure convenient, top-of-the-pocket carry and immediate access, the Edgerati includes a broad-based stainless steel pocket clip that is reversible for left or right-side tip-up carry. The clip straddles a generously sized lanyard hole that also supports the easy attachment of fobs, lanyards, and safety lines.

A Race to the Finish
The inaugural versions of the Edgerati will be available with two different finish options. The first features a satin-finished blade, a gray hardcoat-anodized handle finish, and a brightly finished pocket clip and hardware. For those who prefer a more subdued look, it will also be available in an all-black configuration featuring a Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) blade coating, black anodized scales, and a matching black-coated lock bar, clip, and hardware. Both finish options will offer a choice of either a PlainEdge™ or fully serrated SpyderEdge™ format.

The Edgerati is a stylish, dynamic cutting tool that reflects the remarkable talents and passions of one of the knife industry’s most influential designers. Like the visionary sports car that inspired it, it is an exceptional synthesis of visual appeal and high performance.
