in short the old military knives were in the same basic style , so that the basic features were the same but the knives were quite different in form, you CANNOT confuse a kizlyar knife with an exstream ratio knife , even when you are quite drunk[...]

*lol* :super: :D That made me laugh! ^^

@aik:

http://www.extremaratio.com/ing/ look at their products,
the knife you show is a new production item from extrema ratio, the wood handled knife you show from kizlyar is old, it is production of 1999 or 2000, it predates the exstream ration knife shown in the picture,
the E.R. knife shown has a new handle, i have not been able to find this knife listed on the Extrema ratio site,
the two knives are quite different to say the least,

***Ne, ich fand die Teile schon immer k...e.
Mit eckigen Griffen kann ich gar nichts anfangen.

Kenne ich geht mir genauso :)

@ausjulius: Same here, but we get drunk with beer mostly. I have another question: What about the damascus your are using, what kinds of steel go into it and how many layers do the blades usually have?

damascus steel

Shigga , thankyou ,
beer is a little exspencive in russia, mostly people drink vodka, but in kizlyar thay have cognac made in kizlyar,it is rather good quality, :),

ok the damascus steel, well we have many types, it depends on the customers requirements, less layers means a better pattern, more layers means a stronger blade (for swords) , in smaller knives it is not so important,
some steels used sh 15, 1.5% carbon, u8 .8% carbon,
hvg 1.2% carbon, u10 1% carbon,
and a spring steel of low hardness steel 40 .4% carbon
in the knives irbis damasc is mix 30% st40 40% u8, 30% sh15
the hardness in the steel varies from about 47 rockwell to about 63 rockwell
we also use russian D2 steel,
we can have 10000 layers per centermeter, but mostly it is about
200-300 layer per centermeter as it is easy to see the pattern, we also make layered patterns, say a lamination of 3 or so different damascus steels, you must make acompromise between the number of layers and the strength of the pattern,
generaly on old shashkas there is some tens of thousands of layers in the blade or more, but the pattern is hard to see, the layers are more used to give the sword a high degree of flexability and strength and may contain 5 or 6 different steels , on modern knives the damascus steel is with less layers as it is for visuial effect.

Hi Jenni and Julius,
welcome to the forum!

The K... - 3 and the Extrema Ratio Colmoschin >> Catalogue >> Fixed Blade: Colmoschin, must have had the same designer. He has kept the distinctive handle design, tanto blade, size and lines, he only pronounced the K...- 3´s bayonet guard not as much and has not used N690 steel. N690 probably is rather expensive in Russia. In addition it would be noticeable otherwise too much that he worked for both companies. :steirer:

I guess with all knife companies and designers today it becomes increasingly difficult to find unique designs. Russian D2 sounds good to me. I will be watching for it.

By the way I´m a fan of Spyderco knives. I like their designs a lot. Their constructions are constantly improved. They are ergonomic, grippy and really funcitonal. They use the best materials for reasonable prices. As far as I know they are produced in the USA and Seki City, Japan. I know first hand that even the knives from Seki City are well made.

Nevertheless, Good Luck with Kizlyar knives in Germany!

Regards,
JB

hello,
it gives some that like spyderco, many i think, i think they outsell benchmade and CRKT by quite a degree,
im not to shure on how many are made in japan, but i think many are made in taiwan also , for something to be made in japan or in america it must state made in the U.S.A. or made in japan, in the U.S. the product must contain also a degree of american made materials, so when something says seki, japan, it may just be quality controled from japan and made in taiwan,
some german makers,,, not naming any names ... **** germany, but i can say that none of these knives were touched by a german during fabrication, and the materials are wholely non-german,
if spyderco is made in taiwan or japan or the u.s.a, or argentina, or the chuvash republic... or where ever i have not a problem, i just perosnaly dont like spyderco ( if they were cheaper i might like them much more :hmpf: )
i think being made in taiwan dosnt make a bad knife (benchmade, many coldsteel and crkt... ect ect), it is a knife and it works,
im not personaly a spyderco fan... in my opinion there is better knives for the money,
they are pricey for what you get that is all, and i dont much go for serrations on pocket knives, also there is no hand work in the knives, and very little machine working, i just find the cheap personaly,
it is no attack on spydercos brand or on fans of spyderco
i have owned a spyderco police and found it a decent knife, nothing special, but fine enougth, but like i said you can get much better for the money, if i were planning to copy something it wouldnt be spyderco,

ok, in the post above i clearly exsplaind the origins of the milled military knives, and no the knife "Kondor" is not copied from the EA model you name,,the link is of the old kondor , it is without a finger guard because russian law stated that to sell without a licence you must have not form of finger guard, it is now quite a different knife, the pictures you show are from 1999 from old pictures on the web site, we produce many hundreds of knife, people draw them and we make them, if they draw a knife like extreama ratio then make it, its not a copy, but it uses similar features, and no for shure the italians didnt design the knife for us, at the time the first milled knives were being made there was some unreliable department managers making decisions, many problems efficency,
once it was noticed that the original milled military knife we based the other models on (the knife was called crocodile) had its basic style copied from the knives made by ER, the rubber moulded handle, the one peace steel form, , the knives were changed, the blade form of the knives from the the strat was basicly kizlyar, as the knife that spawned the military knives we make was only a drawing sent to us, not a solid knife,
.. you have to understand kizlyar is a company with nearly 400 employees, and many people are making and ording things in all sort of forms all the time,
please if you have the chance compare the ER knives and the Kizlyar knives,
we also make many other military knives, this is not the only military knives we make,

re- seki city,
many products marked seki are made in taiwan or china for the japanese market, but still many knives are made there, yes they are making some good knives, but also much junk, although as factory wages have improved in japan over the years the amount of junk coming from seki has decreased somewhat drasticly, as its not so profitable to make poor quality goods anymore,
seki still produces many cheap pocket knives and kitchen knives , with only a little better quality over the chinese made products, many are made for american companies under american brands, they are made for a price, seki is no mark of quality, there is good and bad, like solingen, some is very good... some is very bad...

I am not from Germany but from Russia, Kizlyar (well im in trasit now, not quite in kizlyar :) ),
i am an employe for the factory in dagestan,
Mrs Dopgen is incharge of importing and selling out products in germany
and is a seperate entity from my self,
if you have any other questions on the production of the knives or about dagestan or russian knives or such please ask....
